AUD or matrix, the difference from SBD is the crowd's presence on the recording. I suppose organic crowd noise beats high-tech layering of crowd noise. I really don't know.

Can anybody point to a matrix in which the final product out-performs the 2 original sources? It seems to me, a matrix can only be as strong as it's "best available" source.

There's your change sir!

Matrices that are improvements over the originals? Yes, I believe there are some:

9/26/1981 Buffalo - the matrix is a huge improvement over the aud, plus brings in the low end from the spotty board, making two mediocre recordings into one pretty decent one.

Charlie's SB/Auf composite work on 9/06/1980 may not be perfect, but is by far the best source for this show. Maybe that's not exactly a matrix, though ...

9/17/1982 Portland - the matrix is the best source, but of course I've never heard a first set board.

I'm w/Cliff on this one...I'll take a SBD over just about any AUD or Matrix, with very few exceptions.

However, big brains that you all are here--I do agree that the HTH '71 at the Bowl simply sounds better as an AUD w/the crowd getting into it than does the official "cleaned up" version that appears on the Road Trips bonus disc.

I was so looking fwd to that official release being an even better version of that best-ever HTH and was sadly disappointed. The OTHER better version actually appears on the "From the Phil Zone" release in which the crowd noise is very evident and adds to the crescendo drama.

Haven't listened lately, but if memory serves, H2H from Phil Zone IS Hollywood...listen closely.

Relieved to hear it...but not surprised ;-)

I've actually had to put a self-imposed moratorium on listening to 10/29/77 for a while...trying to branch out into more '81 stuff...even dabbling in '76 and '71 after I saw PBS run a film about the closing of the Fillmore West....anyone see this? Santana, Hot Tuna, some other bands I never heard of...and the Boys do 2 tunes, both pretty great: Casey Jones and Johnny B Goode. Anyway, it got me to checking out some '71 stuff...a little raw, IMO, and the later jams aren't flashed out yet...but on the plus side, no Donna, and excellent Billy drumming.

BTW High Flow, if you have a favorite show, let me know...I'll return the favor and give a listen! ;-)

How about set 2 of THIS:

There's no way you can go with the SBD only on this. Not when there's this! You must understand what you are potentially missing out on. YOU MUST!
